“If a new book is a monologue, a used book is a conversation. Underline a passage or write a note in the margin and you have left a message for future readers, or for future versions of yourself … Annotating a book is an expression of hope for the future.”

I’ve resisted scribbling in margins but I do dog ear pages that I’d like to come back to. Maybe I should be reading with pen in hand — especially since it’s my hope that my kids will one day read and enjoy some of the books I’ve read and enjoyed and kept.
